lakeland motor museum

Living and working in the Lake District you sometimes forget all the attractions that are on your doorstep and take it for granted at times. I recently took the family to Lakeland Motor Museum at Backbarrow, which is just past Newby Bridge and the Southern tip of Lake Windermere.

The collection goes back over 100 years and includes automobilia, motor cars, a tribute to the Isle of Man TT races, recreations of old shop windows with authentic advertising signs and content, the history of the bicycle, and childrens peddle cars.

Appleby Horse Fair has been held for one week every year from the first Thursday in June until the second Wednesday since at least 1750. The fair is world famous, and unique throughout Europe.

The annual event is attended by Gypsies and Travellers mainly to buy and sell horses, but also to celebrate their history and folklore and meet with old friends. Traditionally the Travellers reside on Fair Hill, just on the outskirts of Appleby, and younger members of their families wash the horses in the River Eden to prepare them for sale.

The museum is opposite the train station and Peugeot main dealer. The first collection of plants, fossils, minerals, animals and antiques was put together in 1796 by William Todhunter and is one of the oldest museum collections in the country. The museum is based on his collection, and after World War 1 moved location to a former wool warehouse. The museum was then run by honary curators on behalf of the town council, one of which was the famous fellwaker Alfred Wainright.
