Cumbria Dog Training

Witnessing a flock of sheep running frantically from an out of control dog is a distressing sight. And for some pets, it culminates in them being shot, quite legally, by the farmer.

So two years ago, one Cumbrian dog trainer decided to tackle the problem, benefitting owner and farmer alike.

Janet Ardley, owner of Cumbria Dog Training, (http://www.cumbria-dog-training.com ) teamed up with a farming neighbour and devised a training plan that offered something completely different – the chance for owners to bring their dogs into a field of sheep and train them in a controlled manner, to ignore the Herdwicks and Swaledales of this world.

The Dickensian style two day Christmas festival attracts thousands of people each year to the small market town of Ulverston, on the Furness peninsula in the South of Cumbria. The festival is now in its 14th year, and this year takes place on the weekend of Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th November.

It is now one of the most popular Dickensian style festivals in the country and gives locals and visitors the chance to experience the atmosphere of how life might have been in a traditional market town in the 1850s. The festival is organised by a committee of local volunteers and is run on a non-profit basis, relying on fund raising, sponsorships, grants and donations from local businesses. There is a great community spirit with the local shop keepers really getting into the spirit of the festival by dressing up in traditional period clothing. You get a real feeling of stepping back in time as you walk through Ulverston’s cobbled streets and ginnels, with its unique speciality shops and traditional old worldy pubs.
