Goosemire Cottages are discounting all remaining August school holiday weeks by a massive 25% and short breaks are also being offered during this period.

There is plenty going on during August in the Lake District to keep the family entertained, some of the big upcoming events are listed in our previous goosemire cottages blog post.

Unlike a lot of agencies we do not have hidden extras for booking fees, pets, bed linen, cots or highchairs, therefore the price you see is the price you pay for your accommodation, NOT per person.

The Beer Hall at The Mill Yard in Staveley LA8 9LR, is holding its Annual Summer Beer Festival over the weekend of Thursday 19th to Sunday 22nd July 2012.

This is the biggest event of the year held by Hawkshead Brewery and celebrates British craft breweries.

There will be 3 bars and a marque serving over 60 different beers over the weekend, with all cask beers being on handpull from the cellar. There will also be 3 guest ciders from the Pure North brewery which is based in the Holme Valley, Yorkshire and run by Rob the owner of Hideaway Cottage in Staveley. Pure North Cider is pressed by hand and full of anti-oxidants, and can often be cloudy as it is naturally produced from a blend of cider apples picked from their own orchard on site.

Looking For Somewhere To Eat In The Lake District?  Cast Your Eyes Over These 5 Gems

The Lake District is one of my favourite parts of the world. I live here, work here and simply love everything about it.

Probably known best for its crystal clear lakes and breathtaking mountains, what a lot of people don’t know about the Lake District is that it’s packed full of fantastic places to eat.

From Michelin Star restaurants through to wonderful little cafes, here we take a look at five of the Lake District’s culinary gems.

1. L’Enclume

On the south border of the Lake District is L’Enclume, one of the country’s most critically acclaimed restaurants.

Chef Simon Rogan heads up the restaurant and delivers food well worthy of the Michelin Star awarded to it. Using the finest local produce to deliver a menu that is constantly changing, it perfectly reflects the local meats and vegetables that are available at different points throughout the year.

How To Have A Cheap But Fantastic Holiday In The Lake District

Date: 13th June 2012

Whichever newspaper you read at the minute, chances are you’ll feel more than a little down afterwards.

Recessions. Double-dip recessions. Poor savings rates. Companies going into administration. There’s just so much doom and gloom at the moment that it can be difficult for even the most optimistic person to stay happy.

For a lot of people, their summer holidays are the only time of the year that they truly get away from the worries of everyday life. They’ve saved up, got enough money to spend for the week or two and don’t have to worry about anything from their ‘normal’ life during the holiday.

The problem this year - and in recent years - is that as more and more people have less money to spend and the cost of holidays seems to be rising year on year, going on holiday can be extremely costly - and for many, seemingly too costly for them to even consider.

Of course, the price does almost always rise when you choose to go abroad, but even a holiday in the Lake District, one of the most beautiful, open places in the whole of the UK, can appear to be too expensive.

But the positive news is a lot of the potential expense is simply not needed and you really don’t have to spend a small fortune to go on holiday - it’s just a matter of looking at what’s available to you, how you can save money by not buying the things you don’t actually need and simply enjoying the cheap - or free - attractions and activities.

lakeland motor museum

Living and working in the Lake District you sometimes forget all the attractions that are on your doorstep and take it for granted at times. I recently took the family to Lakeland Motor Museum at Backbarrow, which is just past Newby Bridge and the Southern tip of Lake Windermere.

The collection goes back over 100 years and includes automobilia, motor cars, a tribute to the Isle of Man TT races, recreations of old shop windows with authentic advertising signs and content, the history of the bicycle, and childrens peddle cars.

Spring short breaks extended to end of May

Goosemire Cottages has just extended its short breaks availability up to Friday 1st June. Spring is traditionally a very popular time for couples or young families to come away and enjoy all that the Lake District has to offer before the season starts to get very busy with the school holidays. Also the prices are lower at this time of year, so what better reason than to plan a last minute break.

How many Lakes are there in the Lake District?

How many lakes are there in the Lake District? it is actually a trick question. Most people will answer 16 but infact there is only one real lake which is:

Bassenthwaite - 4 miles long, 3/4 mile wide and only 70ft deep. The most northerly of all the lakes and very popular with sailing boats. Also the lake has a very rare breed of fish called Vendace which are only found here and in Derwentwater. Lakeside Lodge is only a stones throw from the lakeshore.
