This Summer the Lake District has a fantastic program of events for all ages and tastes, to help you have a great family packed holiday to remember. The following events will be taking place over the various weekends throughout August:

Festival of Fun - Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th August

Saturday 1pm-10pm

Come down to the Glebe to see the enteries in the Lakes Boat Parade. From 7pm there will be live music playing at the bandstand, and the evening will finish with a spectacular fireworks display.

Sunday 1pm-7pm

Sunday is the final day of the festival. Come and watch the traditional sheep dog trials. This will be your last chance to visit the funfair where you can ride on the bumper cars, carousel and waltzers. There are rides suitable for small children as well as bigger kids (the parents). If your not a fan of fairground rides you can always enjoy an ice cream sat down by the lake, or feed the ducks, geese and swans.

The Lowther Game and Country Fair is organised by Countryman Fairs and will bring together the UK’s finest showcases of country life.

If you are a competitive field sportsman or just interested in traditional country sports then the fair will be hosting more rounds in the world-class championship events in clay shooting, airguns, gundogs, angling and terrier & lurchers. The Mitsubishi Motors World Series Clay Pigeon Shooting and Gundog Championships offer the largest prizes ever seen in their sports, which include two brand new Mitsubishi vehicles and cash prizes worth over £100,000.

The fair really does offer something for everyone, if the field sports are not your cup of tea then there is still plenty more going on to keep all ages entertained including - festival of food, craft marque, antiques marque, falconry, fishing, archery, family entertainment, funfair, ferret racing, and animal displays.

Cumbria Classic Car Show - Sunday 19th August

The Cumbria Classic Weekend was first run in 1989, and has since grown to be the biggest classic car event in the region.

For 2012 the Rose and Thistle Challenge touring event on the Saturday heads into the Borders and Hadrian’s Wall country from a start and finish near Carlisle.

Last year the car show at Dalemain attracted 600 enteries. There are autotests, arena displays, traders, music and discounted tickets to the historic Dalemain House and Gardens.

Grasmere Lakeland Sports & Show - Sunday 26th August 10pm-5pm

The world famous Lakeland Sports has over 160 years of history. The Sports day is made up of the old and traditional sports of fell running, Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling, Hound Trailing and childrens sprint race and track running.  Also in the main arena there will be other attractions including tug of war, dog shows and a marching band. Enteries for events are taken on the day.

Admission prices are Adults £8.50, Children 5-14yrs £2.50, and under 5s free entry. 


Mintfest 2012 - Friday 31st August to Sunday 2nd September

Throughout Kendal (The gateway to the South Lakes)

Mintfest is of the UK’s leading outdoor arts festivals and is now in its 6th year and growing from strength to strength. The festival will feature over 60 artists and companies who will be presenting contemporary dance, music, comedy, acrobatics, magic, juggling and fire.  

All the activities will take place on the streets and parks of Kendal, and the majority of the performances are free to watch.
